Why harvest when the trichomes are milky?

The timing of the harvest of CBD flowers can make a big difference in the cannabinoid profile and effects of the final product. Milky trichomes indicate an ideal point to obtain maximum THC while maintaining an aromatic, terpenoid and resin balance. Here’s why and how to identify it correctly.

What are trichomes and what do they tell us about when to harvest?

Function of trichomes in the cannabis plant

Trichomes are microscopic secretory glands that protect the plant against insects, UV radiation and pathogens, in addition to producing resin with cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, and terpenes that determine aroma and effect.

Types of trichomes

There are three main types:

  • Bulbous (10-30 µm): small and scattered, difficult to see without a microscope.

  • Capitate-sessile (25-100 µm): fungus form attached to the plant.

  • Capitate-stalked: the largest and most visible, fundamental in the harvesting of trichomes and extraction of cannabis resin.

What do their colors indicate?

Transparent

They indicate immaturity: few cannabinoids, low potency. Not the time for harvesting buds.

Milky

Whitish color that indicates maximum concentration of cannabinoids and terpenes, ideal for a cerebral, powerful and balanced effect.

Amber

It is formed when THC is degraded into CBN, which provides more relaxing or sedative effects. Sensitive Toc if you are looking for this profile.

Why harvest when the trichomes are milky?

This state represents the peak of potency: higher THC/terpene levels with less degradation. If you wait too long, THC can decrease as the trichomes turn amber.

The milky trichome interval lasts about 1-2 weeks, a golden window for trichome harvesting.

How to identify milky trichomes?

What tools to use to observe them?

Uses:

  • Jeweler’s magnifier (30x-60x).

  • Digital microscope (60x-100x).

  • Macro or high resolution camera accompanied by good LED light.

Where and how to look at trichomes correctly?

  1. Take samples from the most mature areas (upper part of the bud).

  2. Focus on the capitate-stalked trichomes, the most indicative.

  3. Observe several buds to decide the time of harvest according to the balance: 70-90 % milky, 10-30 % amber.

What happens if you harvest before or after the milky point?

  • Before, with transparent trichomes: less potency, aroma and incomplete chemical profile.

  • Then, with many amber trichomes: intense sedative effect, less THC, more CBN, more earthy aromas.

A balanced equilibrium (≃90 % milky, ≃10 % amber) offers versatile, energetic and aroma-filled effects, ideal for medical treatments and careful recreational use.
