What is CBD oil?
Oil is one of the ways we can obtain cannabis, and it is often a much more convenient form to acquire, store, and administer.
According to a study by the Harvard Medical School, there appears to be evidence that CBD is beneficial for combating chronic pain, alleviating nausea, and promoting good rest.
CBD oil for pets
The oil formulation for humans and pets is essentially the same — what actually varies are the percentages of THC and CBD, and in our case also the flavour.
We offer several types of CBD oil for dogs, CBD oil for cats, and CBD oil for horses.
How to use CBD for pets
Before diving into the percentages and administration methods for cannabidiol oil, we need to keep the following points in mind:
Geographic legality
Depending on where you are located and the legislation in force in that country, you will be able to use your CBD oil in different ways. Not all countries allow sublingual or direct use of cannabidiol oil, so before using this product you should research its legal status. In Spain, for example, sublingual use of the oil is not permitted — it can only be used topically.
Consult your vet
The first thing you should do is consult your vet about the possible use of CBD oil for pets, as you need to take into account any ongoing treatment your pet may be receiving and be aware of their medical history.
Amounts and percentages
In addition, every person or pet is different, which is why we need to start with low amounts and percentages and gradually observe how the response to the oil develops, increasing the administered amount over time.
Avoiding product contamination
Just as with cosmetics for humans, the best practice is to avoid contact between the pipette and any surface — meaning there should be no direct contact between skin, the animal, or a tongue and the pipette, to prevent the product from becoming contaminated.
We offer salmon-flavoured oils to make administration as easy as possible, since it is preferable for the oil to be taken directly rather than mixed with food or treats. However, if your pet does not respond well to the oil given on its own, it can of course be mixed with food. We remind you again that the consumption of CBD products in Spain is not permitted.
Now that we have some introductory points clear, let’s look at the exact calculation for ideal use of cannabis oil for pets. A maximum dose of 1 mg of CBD per kg of body weight is used. The maximum dose for a dog weighing 10 kg would be 10 mg of CBD per day.
In this way, we start with a dose of 0.1 mg/kg every 12 hours (twice a day), keeping this as the lowest dose for one week and observing the effects. Often, a low dose will work well. If no effect is seen, it is recommended to increase to 0.25 mg/kg twice a day or to increase gradually as needed. We remind you that in Spain CBD products are for topical use.
